What’s the process of marriage registration in China?

Instructions on Marriage Registration of Foreigners in Shanghai

 

 

1.What are the Registration requirements?

(1)The marriage is based on the free will of both parties.

(2)Both parties have reached the legitimate marriage age. The minimum age for getting married is 20 for females and 22 for males.

(3)None of the parties have a spouse, i.e. they should be single, divorced, or widowed.

(4)The parties should not be lineal relatives by blood or collateral relatives by blood up to the third degree of kinship.

(5)The Chinese party shall have citizenship of Shanghai (Shanghai household)

 

2. Where to register?

Parties of marriage shall register in person at the Shanghai Registration Center of Marriage and Adoption to obtain marriage certificates

Office Hours:

9:00-11:00 am, 1:30-4:30 p.m. on Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday

9:00-11:00 am, 1:30-3:00 p.m. on Tuesday, Saturday

 

The office does not accept applications on statutory holidays except New Year’s Day (Jan 1st), Labor Day (May 1st) and National Day (October 1st). During these three days, applications can be submitted at 9:00-11:00 am and 1:30-3:00 p.m.

3.What documents should I bring?

(1)Chinese citizen’s identification card and residence registration (household certificate)

(2)Foreigner’s passport

(3)The certification that indicates the foreigner has no spouse (stating single, divorced, or widowed) with 6-month validity

 

-issued by the notary office or entitled organ in the applicant's country of nationality upon the authentication by the embassy (consulate) of the PRC

 

- or issued by the embassy (consulate) of the PRC

 

A Chinese version translated by a qualified translation agency shall be provided together with a photocopy of the agency's business license

 

(4)3 recent colourful couple photos with the upper body and bare head with the size of 4*6cm

(5)Declaration of Applying for Marriage Registration (staff will provide, both parties need to fill it on the spot)

 

4.How to register?

Make reservation:

(1)The foreigner shall contact his or her embassy or consulate for certification to indicate that they have no spouse

(2)Contact the translation agency

(3)Make an appointment online from the website http://zwdt.sh.gov.cn/govPortals/bsfw/item/20242ca6-4dc2-4f50-bbfb-b6daeb6d7be7

(4)Take the documents and go to the registration center on the day of the appointment

(5)Submit the file and get the marriage certificate

 

While you are at the registration center:

(1) Submit the documents for initial review

(2) Staffs ask the will of from both parties to get married

(3)Check and verify the documents for acceptance

(4) Fill in the “Declaration of Applying for Marriage Registration.”

(5) Read out the declaration

(6) Staffs sign on the declaration

(7) Both parties sign and press fingerprint

(8) Get the marriage certificate

The busiest appointment months are May, December, and October, and the least active months are February, April, and March.
